Single / Double Scaffolding

NJW Scaffolding

Single scaffolding, also known as bricklayers scaffolding, is a type of scaffolding that is typically used in brick masonry. It is a single framework that consists of standards, ledgers, and putlogs. The standards are placed at a distance of about 1.2 m from the wall and at intervals of 2-2.5 m.

These standards are then connected by ledgers at a vertical interval of 1.2 to 1.5 m. Putlogs are then taken out from the hole left in the wall at an interval of 1.2 to 1.5 m. One end of the putlogs is placed on the ledgers and the other end in the hole of the wall. This type of scaffolding is cost-effective and easy to construct, making it a popular choice for many construction projects.

On the other hand, double scaffolding, also known as mason’s scaffolding, is generally used for stone masonry. In stone walls, it is hard to make holes in the wall to support putlogs, so two rows of scaffolding are constructed to make it strong. The first row is 20 – 30 cm away from the wall and the other one is 1m away from the first row. Then putlogs are placed that are supported by both the frames. To make it more strong, cross braces and rakers are provided. Double scaffolding provides a stronger and more stable platform for workers, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring the safety of the workforce.

The Importance of Single and Double Scaffolding

The use of single or double scaffolding depends on the type of construction work. As mentioned, single scaffolding is typically used for brick masonry. It provides a cost-effective and efficient solution for construction projects that involve brickwork. The simplicity of its design allows for easy assembly and disassembly, making it a practical choice for many builders.

Double scaffolding, on the other hand, is typically used for stone masonry. Stone walls are generally harder and more difficult to work with than brick walls, making it challenging to create holes for putlogs. As such, a stronger and more stable scaffolding solution is required. Double scaffolding, with its two rows of scaffolding and additional support from cross braces and rakers, provides this stability. It ensures that workers can safely and efficiently carry out their work, even on challenging stone masonry projects.

Choosing Between Single and Double Scaffolding

The choice between single and double scaffolding is largely dependent on the nature of the work, the type of masonry, and the height of the structure. For brick masonry, single scaffolding is usually sufficient. It provides the necessary support and stability for workers, while also being cost-effective and easy to construct.

However, for stone masonry or for structures that are very high, double scaffolding may be necessary. The additional strength and stability provided by double scaffolding ensure the safety and efficiency of the workers. It’s always important to consult with a professional scaffolding company to determine the best type of scaffolding for your specific project. They will be able to assess the requirements of the project and recommend the most suitable scaffolding solution.

Safety Measures in Single and Double Scaffolding

Regardless of whether you’re using single or double scaffolding, safety should always be the top priority. This includes ensuring that the scaffolding structure is stable and secure. All components should be in good condition, and the scaffolding should be erected on solid ground. Additionally, guardrails and toe boards should be in place to prevent falls. Regular inspections should also be carried out to identify any potential issues early and to ensure that the scaffolding remains safe and secure throughout the duration of the project.

In addition to these basic safety measures, it’s also important to ensure that all workers are properly trained in the use of scaffolding. They should be aware of the potential risks and know how to safely navigate the scaffolding. Proper personal protective equipment, such as helmets and safety harnesses, should also be used at all times.
