Major Loft Conversion Scaffold – Bespoke Access Solution

Client: Laura
Sector: Domestic
Location: South London

Project Overview

Laura planned a major loft conversion to transform her unused attic into a spacious new bedroom complete with a modern en-suite. The project involved substantial structural alterations, including adjustments to the existing roof line, raising internal ceiling heights, and constructing new dormer features.

Because of the scale of the works, safe and reliable overhead access was essential from the very start. Laura contacted NJW Scaffolding to design and install a scaffold system that would fully support the build while keeping the property protected throughout the renovation period.

Following a detailed site visit and survey, our team developed a bespoke wraparound scaffold solution designed to follow the contours of the sloped roof. The structure provided full external access while maintaining stability and safe working conditions for all trades involved.

Scope of Works

We delivered a tailored domestic scaffolding package to support the six-week loft conversion programme. The works included:

  • Full site survey and bespoke scaffold design
    • Wraparound scaffolding following the roofline
    • Installation of adaptable working platforms
    • Overhead temporary canopy for weather protection
    • Safe access provision for all roofing and structural works
    • Ongoing support throughout the renovation period

The scaffold was carefully configured to allow uninterrupted progress across every phase of the build.

Challenges and Solutions

This loft conversion required extensive roof-level work, which meant standard access would not provide the flexibility or coverage needed.

The main challenge was creating safe, continuous access along a sloped roof profile while also protecting the exposed structure during the build. Our solution was to design a wraparound scaffold that closely followed the roof contours. This approach ensured contractors could work efficiently at every required point without repositioning equipment.

Weather protection was also critical due to the six-week construction programme and the level of roof alteration involved. To address this, we installed an overhead canopy system that kept the work area dry and shielded from the elements. This helped prevent delays and protected the property interior during the structural phase.

By combining careful design with adaptable platforms, we created a safe and practical working environment that supported the ambitious scope of the conversion.

The Result

With NJW Scaffolding’s bespoke overhead access solution in place, contractors were able to carry out the structural modifications smoothly and safely. The scaffold provided reliable support for roof adjustments, dormer construction, and all associated works.

The project progressed efficiently, and Laura’s vision of a spacious new loft bedroom with en-suite was successfully realised. The flexible scaffold layout proved essential in allowing the build team to work confidently at height while maintaining full weather protection.

Client Feedback

Laura was extremely pleased with both the process and the outcome. She highly commended NJW Scaffolding for delivering a reliable and professional service that played a key role in enabling the successful completion of her loft conversion.

This project reflects our commitment to designing practical, site-specific scaffolding solutions that help homeowners and contractors carry out complex domestic builds safely and efficiently.
