Project Overview

A prominent Grade II listed church in South London required careful restoration of its 60-metre spire after decades of exposure to harsh weather. The masonry had begun to deteriorate, and specialist repair work was essential to preserve the structure.

Because of the spire’s historic status and fragile condition, traditional tied scaffolding was not suitable. Any direct contact or invasive fixing risked damaging the aged stonework. NJW Scaffolding was appointed to design a safe access solution that would allow restoration works to proceed without compromising the integrity of the structure.

Following a detailed assessment, we developed a fully independent scaffold system that safely surrounded the spire while maintaining strict non-contact principles.

Scope of Works

Our team delivered a specialist heritage scaffolding package tailored to the sensitivities of the structure. The works included:

• Detailed site survey using non-contact methods
• Drone and pole measurements to avoid physical impact
• Design of independent freestanding scaffold structure
• Full perimeter access around the 60-metre spire
• Safety barriers for working at height
• Protection measures for the surrounding church grounds
• Six-week support period during restoration works

Every element was planned to protect the historic fabric while providing safe, practical access for the masonry specialists.

Challenges and Solutions

The primary challenge was the fragile condition of the Grade II listed spire. Traditional scaffold ties or direct loading points could have caused irreversible damage to the aged masonry.

To eliminate this risk, we carried out a non-contact survey using drones and telescopic poles. This allowed our design team to gather accurate measurements without touching the structure at any stage.

We then engineered an independent scaffold that fully encircled the spire while remaining completely separate from the stonework. This freestanding approach ensured structural stability while preserving the integrity of the historic fabric.

Working at significant height also required enhanced safety planning. We installed robust edge protection and site barriers to safeguard both the restoration team and the public areas below.

Through careful design and experienced installation, we created a solution that balanced access, safety, and conservation requirements.

The Result

From the close yet non-abrasive working platforms, specialist contractors successfully carried out the required preservation works over a six-week programme. The scaffold provided consistent, secure access to all elevations of the spire without any physical impact on the historic masonry.

The restoration was completed smoothly, and the church retained its architectural character while benefiting from essential structural repairs.
