Urgent Warehouse Expansion – High-Level Access Solution

Client: Confidential Warehouse Operator
Sector: Industrial / Commercial
Location: South London

Project Overview

A busy warehouse facility in South London needed to rapidly increase storage capacity to meet rising inventory demand. The plan involved installing 15-metre-high pallet racking across approximately 3,000 square metres of operational space.

The challenge was clear. The client required safe overhead access for installers working at height, but the warehouse also needed to remain fully operational throughout the build. Forklift movements, stock handling, and day-to-day logistics could not be interrupted.

NJW Scaffolding was appointed to design a flexible access solution that would support the high-level installation while allowing the warehouse to continue running around the clock.

Scope of Works

Our team delivered a responsive industrial access package designed around the client’s tight programme and live working environment. The works included:

  • Supply of movable staircase scaffold units
  • Strategic positioning to support 15m racking installation
  • Daily relocation to match installation sequencing
  • Safe working platforms for high-level crews
  • Protection measures within active warehouse environment
  • Ongoing support throughout the eight-week programme

The focus was on adaptability, speed, and maintaining safe separation between installation teams and warehouse operations.

Challenges and Solutions

This project presented two major pressures: height and continuity of operations.

The installation teams needed consistent and secure access to work at up to 15 metres, but fixed scaffolding would have restricted forklift routes and disrupted the warehouse workflow. In addition, the programme was tight, requiring a solution that could evolve as the racking installation progressed across the 3,000 sq m floor.

Our solution was to deploy versatile movable staircase scaffold units. These systems provided stable access for operatives while allowing our team to reposition the structures quickly as work zones shifted.

Because the stair units could be relocated efficiently, we maintained clear aisles for forklifts and warehouse staff at all times. This meant the client’s business operations continued without costly downtime.

We worked closely with the site team throughout the eight-week programme, adjusting scaffold positions daily to stay aligned with the installation sequence.

The Result

The adaptable access strategy enabled contractors to carry out high-level pallet racking installation safely and efficiently across the entire warehouse footprint.

By maintaining clear working aisles and supporting 24/7 operations, NJW Scaffolding helped the client avoid disruption while still meeting an aggressive expansion timeline. The project progressed smoothly, with overhead access always available exactly where it was needed.

Project Outcome

The warehouse expansion was completed on schedule, allowing the client to significantly increase storage capacity and respond to growing inventory demands.

Our responsive, movable scaffold approach was credited with enabling uninterrupted workflow and safe high-level installation throughout the project. This case highlights NJW Scaffolding’s ability to deliver practical industrial access solutions in live environments where flexibility, speed, and safety are critical.
